Moses and Leadership Focus

My Good Soup thoughts were a defense of Team Leadership. However, even if you have a balanced team with strengths of shepherding, leadership, and administration, the daily demands of ministry can consume the time and energy of this team. There are a host of matters of pastoral care, administrative detail, staff oversight, complaints, conflicts, and the hands on aspects of ministry.

In the growing medium to very large sized church, the leadership team ensures that it doesn’t allow the day-to-day demands of ministry to get in the way of leadership and leadership execution. The team focuses in such a way that the day-to-day is well attended to and the necessary changes for the future are also implemented. But how is this done?

Our friend Moses has some things to say about that. He had an interesting conversation with his father-in-law one day in which he revealed that he was at the mercy of his organization. Jethro asked Moses why he allowed all the people to come to him with their problems. In Ex. 18:15, Moses gave the same answer that anyone would who pays little or no attention to his organization design:

Moses answered him, "Because the people come to me to seek God's will.”

I plan to unpack my thoughts on this conversation over the next several blog posts. The insight of Jethro and the changes that Moses implemented inform how we can stay focused and fulfill our calling as leaders.

Blessings on your 2010!
