Focus through Change Leadership

Three months after Moses changed his org structure he was sitting in his Sand Utility Vehicle just after a meeting with some of his leaders of 1000’s. He was glad that after listening to the Eli Ramsey Show that he bought a used SUV with cash. He maneuvered it out onto the sandway and began to reflect on several things as the desert wind blew through his beard.

He remembered how this change had been an energizing and challenging transition for both him and the people of Israel. He laughed when he thought about the chaos of the first meeting. He smiled as he thought about how quickly Aaron and Hur had supported the idea of the new org chart. They were influential with many families who just could not accept it at first. He became more sober as he remembered his late night session with Levi. With tears, this man screamed at him, “Moses I alone was standing next to you when you gave that right hook to that Egyptian. You saved my life and now I can’t come to you with my family problems?”

It was now three months into it, and the Atta boys were now outnumbering the complaints. In fact Levi had just this day told him, “I get it now Moses. Thanks for what you are doing.” Pulling off the sandway and up to his tent, he thanked God for the greater balance he now had in his family and ministry life. He also made a mental note to call a meeting of his leaders of 1000’s to discuss a change in their communication system.

Designing the org chart is just one form of change leadership and change leadership is one way that effective leaders stay focused. They know that real leadership anticipates and implements new programs or systems, facility expansion, or a host of other innovations. In order to get from where they are to where they are going, they will have to implement changes. They know who their change advocates are. They will also think and pray through how their people process change and work with that not against it.

What change are you going through right now in your ministry? What change do you need to lead your ministry through that you have not? Remember our friend Moses, and get a new ride home.
